Phenacetin, introduced in 1887, is used primarily as an analgesic. The actions it displaces over the body are a direct result of its effects on the sensory tracts of the spinal cord. Acting as an antipyreitc, These actions work much like a depressant acting as a negative inotrop. It is used to treat rhumatoid arthritis as well as intercostal neuralgia and some forms of ataxia.
